About Newport Philharmonic Choir

When the National Eisteddfod came to Newport in 1988, the festival featured a choir of local voices. The singers were keen to continue performing together beyond the event, so Newport Philharmonic Choir was formed.

Over the years, the choir has acquired a wide repertoire of music and we sing in many languages (including Welsh, of course). Our enjoyment of choral singing and desire to improve our musical skills bring us together, regardless of age or background. The choir community is social and supportive, eager to welcome new singers and cultivate longstanding friendships.

In a typical year, we perform three concerts:
  • An evening of short pieces, accompanied by piano, and with guest soloists
  • A major concert, often as a collaboration with another choir and/or orchestra
  • A Christmas concert, usually supporting a charity chosen by choir members
We also sing at events we are invited to attend, especially around Christmas.

Since the city of Newport was twinned with Heidenheim in Germany, we have developed a close friendship with Oratorienchor Heidenheim.
